Good Places to Eat

If you want to eat in the City of Durham, a useful review was done by the Guardian on 11th February 2011.  Click HERE to see it.

Tried and Tested...

Those that are marked "" are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme

  • The Red Lion, North Bitchburn.  Good quality modern cooking in a relaxed environment.  It is VERY popular with our guests

  • The Colliery Inn, Crook - read our review here.  Good, plentiful pub food

  • Bruno's Bistro, Willington.  Italian (VERY!)

  • Fox & Hounds, Newfield.  Good Restaurant; but limited opening hours

  • Black Bull, Frosterley.  Good food, good fun - a characterful place, with a character as the landlord

  • Oldfields Restaurant, Durham.  A specialist in slow food, using English ingredients, sourced locally.  They are almost as fixated as we are on food-miles!"

More generally, Discover Weardale - a specialist directory website  focussing on Weardale - just fascinating. It's run by the Weardale Visitors' Network

Further afield:

  • Blackfriars Restaurant, Newcastle.  One of the oldest dining rooms in the UK, and great for special events and mediaeval banquets.

  • Battlesteads Hotel and Restaurant, Wark, Nr Hexham.  The style is primarily modern British but with a smattering of international choices for those with a more cosmopolitan palate.

Fresh from the Farm

Bradley Burn Farm Shop, near Wolsingham, stocks lots of good stuff, much of it grown on the farm.  We get most of our bread flour from there - and the potatoes for the potato bread.

Lowfields Farm Shop, Willington

Click HERE to see a selection of local farm shops, several of whom have conspired together to deliver your breakfasts!
