- About Dowfold House
-
Dowfold House is a lovely Victorian house in a quiet rural
location overlooking Crook, with wonderful views over Wear Valley and
beyond to Weardale. Built in 1860 for Joseph Pease, local mine owner
and first Quaker MP, the house has some historical interest. It
is an ideal place to stay when visiting the North East of England.
Durham City is just a 15 minute drive away and the house is just
a few minutes from the A68, a major route to and from Scotland.
- Relax
-
Take afternoon tea in our residents' lounge. On cold winter's
evenings snuggle into our comfortable sofas around an open log
fire. You may even wish to select a book or magazine from our
library.
- Breakfast in style
-
Breakfast is served in our elegant Dining Room between 7:30 and
9:30am. Enjoy a truly
English country house experience, with crisp table linen and fine
china. We pride ourselves on using only the finest produce, many of
them local, including free-range eggs and delicious sausages and bacon
from local farms. Jams and marmalades are home made, often using fruit
from the garden ( but not the oranges in the marmalade !!!)

Ask for the newspaper of your choice on booking and it will be
ready for you at breakfast, with our compliments
- Don't just stay indoors!
As honoured guests you are welcome to bask in the conservatory, relax on the
patio, stroll about the garden and enjoy the spectacular views - or (if you are
feeling viciously competitive) play croquet or boules.
